Historically, Microsoft was an enemy of the open source community. In more recent years, however, the Windows-maker has become an ally. In fact, under the leadership of Satya Nadella, it can be said that Microsoft is now an open source champion!
Microsoft has released its second Insider preview build for Windows Server 2016. The new version, debuted as Windows Server Insider Build 16257, enables Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) to offer distributions such as Ubuntu and OpenSUSE to the proprietary server platform.
The Linux Foundation is the most reputable non-profit open source organization. On last of 2016, they announced that Microsoft had joined the team at a Platinum member at the Microsoft’s Connect(); developer ceremony in New York.
Microsoft is positioning itself as the software vendor of choice for enterprises that maintain hybrid cloud environments, and it's opening its arms to Linux and open source software to do it.
